Sleep & Pain
A common question that often gets asked is the relationship between sleep and pain.
Are they related? Does one affect the other? Just like many factors, not having a restful sleep can increase pain. Sleep can affect many other biophysical and psychological health issues. An example is someone with depression or anxiety.
How do I know that I may not be getting a restful sleep?
- Hard time falling asleep
- Not feeling rested during the day
- Waking up during the night
Somethings that may be beneficial is sleep hygiene and having a set routine!
- Making sure to set a time to start getting ready for bed. Set a schedule for wake up and bedtime that you can keep consistent
- Unplug and get away from devices an hour or so before bed – step away from social media
- Quiet peaceful environment that is comfortable for you – bedroom as a place to sleep, not to do work etc.
- Avoid caffeine, and alcohol in the afternoon/evening
- Using a sleep diary
- Being physical activity throughout your day
