Knee Pain?
History of catching, locking, twisting, tearing sensation, inability to fully straighten the knee, stiffness?
Like many areas in the body, there are many factors that can attribute to someone’s symptoms. These can be biophysical, psychological, social etc. Some of the common causes of knee pain can include trauma (fall on ice, sports injury), occupation, lack of mobility and can be due to infections, arthritis, fractures and other serious pathologies. Knee injuries can affect bone, ligaments, etc. Other issues such as hip or foot pain can affect the knee as we change the way we walk and might increase stress on the knee. Weight also has an affect with increased pressure going into the knee. Recovery and prognosis of symptoms also depends on the patient, complaint and duration of symptoms and the above-mentioned factors.
Here at MWC, when assessing for knee pain, we will take a history to rule out major structural or other pathologies we deem red flags, yellow flags (comorbidities) and prognostic factors that might delay recovery time. A physical exam will be included to assess for neurological signs, ruling out pathologies etc. At this time, a referral to another healthcare provider might be necessary depending on findings. With treatment, it is always important to re-assess the patient at every appointment to monitor for worsening of symptoms.
In terms of management, here at MWC, some of the following may be beneficial for knee pain and mobility impairments:
– Exercise – in clinic and home based
– Laser therapy
– Acupuncture
– Education and reassurance
