Sleep & Pain

A common question that often gets asked is the relationship between sleep and pain.

Are they related? Does one affect the other? Just like many factors, not having a restful sleep can increase pain. Sleep can affect many other biophysical and psychological health issues. An example is someone with depression or anxiety.

How do I know that I may not be getting a restful sleep?

  • Hard time falling asleep
  • Not feeling rested during the day
  • Waking up during the night

Somethings that may be beneficial is sleep hygiene and having a set routine!

  • Making sure to set a time to start getting ready for bed. Set a schedule for wake up and bedtime that you can keep consistent
  • Unplug and get away from devices an hour or so before bed – step away from social media
  • Quiet peaceful environment that is comfortable for you – bedroom as a place to sleep, not to do work etc.
  • Avoid caffeine, and alcohol in the afternoon/evening
  • Using a sleep diary
  • Being physical activity throughout your day
