Treatment Options for Neck Pain

Depending on the nature of your neck pain, there are a variety of different treatment options that may be utilized. Not every treatment will benefit everyone, but a treatment plan will be catered to you based on the best evidence available, clinical expertise, and your goals as a patient.

Exercise is very beneficial for any condition and it is important that your practitioner tailors exercises to you. Stretches can be beneficial to help to loosen up tight and stiff areas, but in order to have long-term benefit, strengthening protocols must be utilized. Stretches will help to treat the symptoms associated with your condition, but most often not the direct cause of it. Strengthening muscles in a gradual manner will help to increase the load muscles are able to withstand and in turn reduce pain, improve mobility, and help to reduce risk of re-injury.

K-laser is beneficial to help to increase blood flow to an area of injury, help to regenerate and repair tissues and improve healing times.

Acupuncture can be helpful to reduce muscular pain and improve mobility. Research has shown benefit in treatment of headaches associated with neck pain.

Massage therapy can be beneficial to help with increased tension in the muscles surrounding the area of complaint. Tension may cause increased pain, tenderness and change in mobility. Soft tissue therapy may help to relieve pain and inflammation, improve circulation and help to restore mobility. Research shows benefit in terms of short-term relief.

Spinal Decompression (Traction) is a treatment that is frequently used by chiropractors. Again, depending on patient complaint, symptoms, and an assessment, this method may or may not be used.

Manipulation is a hands-on therapy where a high velocity low amplitude thrust is applied to a joint to help improve range of motion and function.
