TMJ – Jaw Pain

TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder) is the most common type of jaw pain.

This joint is located at the front of the ear canal.  It allows for the movement of the jaw both up and down as well as side to side.  The bones of the joint are separated by a disc of cartilage which allows our jaw to move with ease.  When muscles are irritated, the disc is displaced, if you have arthritis or another joint disease, the disc may be disrupted.

Generally patients complain about severe pain in the jaw area.  Other symptoms include popping, clicking, muscle tenderness, joint tenderness, being unable to open your jaw as wide as possible, pain when chewing or moving the jaw, earaches, or headaches.

TMJ can be caused by genetics, arthritis, jaw injury, stress, clenching or grinding of teeth, dental surgery or infections.

There are several methods of treatment for TMJ which include Ultrasound, Acupuncture, K-Laser Therapy, Specialized Massage Therapy, Exercise and Relaxation Techniques.  Our clinic has recently been getting results with the K-laser.  It is a very comfortable and effective treatment for jaw pain.
