Plantar Fasciitis “Heel Spur Syndrome” is the most common cause of foot pain. Plantar fasciitis occurs when the plantar fascia is pulling on the membrane that covers the outer surface of the heel bone. This causes inflammation and pain. The plantar fascia is the tissue that helps to maintain the integrity of the arch of the foot.
Generally the patient complains about severe pain the the back portion or heel of the foot. This pain tends to be worse first thing in the morning or after they have been off their feet for long periods of time.
People who are most commonly at risk for having plantar fasciitis are those who have a sudden weight gain, those who frequently walk or run, people who have foot deformities such as flat feet or fallen arches, diabetics, people with arthritis and also people who wear shoes without the proper supports in them.
There are several methods of treatment for plantar fasciitis such as K-Laser therapy, Acupuncture, foot bracing and the use of a custom made foot orthotics. The orthotic is designed to stabilize the forefoot and control the pronation, thus, reducing the amount of inflammation and pain to the area.
